3 nights at the Mena House Oberoi, Cairo
Hotel Description
Mena House Oberoi is located under the shadow of the pyramids and is one of Egypt's most luxurious and historic hotels. Built originally as a hunting lodge by the King of Egypt, it was meticulously renovated by The Oberoi Group. The Hotel combines the best of the old and the new with its arabesque Islamic design and furnishings and all the modern comforts and conveniences of a luxury Hotel. Set in 40 acres of gardens with the pyramids towering above, Mena House Oberoi has 523 rooms and suites in the Palace and Garden wing and cabana style rooms by the Swimming Pool. It has a superb selection of restaurants with cuisine from around the world and the oldest Golf Course in Africa situated next to the hotel.
In our opinion: the highest standard of accommodation that we offer in the pyramids area of Cairo, as well as the closest to this great wonder of the world. The hotel is very grand and will be amazing once all of the renovations have been completed.
Please note: A major $100 million renovation programme is taking place at Mena House Oberoi.
Renovation of all the rooms (328 rooms including 3 suites) in the Garden Wing is complete. Guests have enjoyed the new product and commented positively on the clean design and user friendly facilities and service.
The new outdoor heated swimming pool (heated in winter) is now open from 0800 until sunset. A pool side bar caters to the beverage needs of guests. Lunch is served at Cesare terrace. The Italian restaurant will soon be open for dinner with a menu offering traditional Italian food served in a contemporary environment.
The spa and fitness centre are currently out of operation. These facilities are expected to reopen in July 2010. A temporary fitness centre is available to guests – on request. This is located on the 9th floor of the Palace. Two temporary massage rooms have also been created on the 9th floor and are available on a request basis.
Regarding the new All Day Dining restaurant, this is expected to be ready by September 2010 with magnificent views of the Pyramids of Cheops and Chephren.
The Palace wing at Mena House Oberoi, which was expected to shut from 1 June 2010 will continue to welcome guests. The new date for closure is June 2011. The reason for this delay is that the designs for restoration are taking longer than expected to finalise. As you would imagine, the Palace is a national treasure and the hotel must ensure that any design change adds to the final product and does not detract from the history.
The golf course at Mena House Oberoi is closed for renovation and is expected to reopen in January 2011.
The entire renovation schedule and work timings have been structured to ensure minimal impact on the guest's experience. Renovation work commences at 0900 and ends at 1900. With all the construction activities limited to the Garden and an extension wing, guests in the Palace will not be affected by the ongoing work (Update 20 July 2010).
7 nights at the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh, Hurghada
Hotel Description
The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh is an exclusive all-suite luxury resort with a private 850 metre beach of golden sand. Designed in contemporary Arabic style, the architecture, while perfectly complementing the dramatic setting, provides an ambience of peace and privacy. Shaded corridors and arched courtyards create dramatic spaces for al fresco dining. The open air swimming pool with an infinity edge offers breathtaking views of the Red Sea and is also heated during the winter months. The Banyan Tree Spa, is a safe haven from busy schedules and the rush of daily life. The hotel offers 102 suites and is 25 minutes from the centre of shopping and nightlife in Hurghada, and 20 minutes from the airport.
In our opinion: This is one of the finest resorts we feature in the Red Sea. Small and intimate, accommodation consists of suites and there is a real focus on service. In a remote location, with a fabulous soft, sandy beach, it is the perfection place for a romantic getaway.
